What looks like an innocuous piece of tape and dried blood on the Operating Room floor actually speaks volumes as to one of many patient safety concerns held by staff. Despite being repeatedly assured by the Director of Tyler Heart & Vascular and the Director of EVS that the Hybrid OR rooms were being terminally cleaned daily, this little guy and the bacteria he harbored, somehow survived for well over a month. I’m told the reason our rooms look like they do Monday morning is, “We don’t have a cleaning crew on the weekends.” For those that don’t know, unlike the vast majority of hospitals on the west coast, CHOMP/Montage refuses to provide dedicated cleaning crews for proper sanitation in procedural areas. Instead mandating the Hybrid/OR staff clean the rooms themselves in between cases, despite not receiving proper training or supplies. This process also minimizes mandatory staff breaks and rest periods as well. There are new policies and procedures in place, see 3.b, but they are not being enforced. From what I can see are due to budgetary reasons. Recently, several surgeons from a newly acquired non Montage group announced they would no longer perform their surgeries at CHOMP because of unaddressed infections. One source was found to be from freshly sterilized surgical equipment that obviously wasn’t. When backed into a corner, it was finally confirmed that, Central Processing, those responsible for sterilization, therefore infections, were short staffed due to budget cuts.
